September Project Spotlight: SAN New Terminal 1

Earlier this week, the New Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport opened its doors, unveiling 19 new gates and modern passenger amenities. This milestone marks the completion of the first phase of the $3 billion program.

Phase I – delivered on time and on budget – features a fully automated outbound and inbound baggage handling system, five miles of new roadways with elevated departures and arrivals lanes, outdoor dining with city skyline views, commissioned artwork, and more.

Since early 2021, JWI has played a key role in this design-build project with Turner-Flatiron Joint Venture. What began as a Subject Matter Expert role for Baggage Handling Systems evolved into managing all phases of design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and testing – not only the baggage handling system, but also for the security checkpoint and passenger boarding bridges.

The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority’s vision is to replace the existing 58-year-old terminal with a modern, 30-gate facility. The roughly 1 million-square-foot terminal will be nearly three times the size of the original. Phase II, scheduled to begin next month, will add 11 more gates and is expected to be completed in early 2028. The program also includes a new parking structure and transit area, dual-level roadway and curbfront, on-airport entry roadway, and the relocation of the airport’s administration building.

This investment places San Diego alongside other leading U.S. airports building next-generation terminals to meet the needs of travelers for decades to come.

JWI is proud to support the Turner-Flatiron Joint Venture and the San Diego Regional Airport Authority in delivering this historic project!
