Elevating Commutes: JWI Joins CTA in Harlem Bus Bridge Replacement
Paving the way for smoother commutes, JWI is part of the Chicago Transit Authority on the $30M Harlem Bus Bridge Project—an important infrastructure upgrade.
This project involves the complete replacement of the existing bridge structure over the Kennedy Expressway and CTA right-of-way, which supports bus circulation around the terminal. The scope of work includes full removal of the bridge’s superstructure—both the deck and steel components. Beam seats will be repaired, followed by installing new galvanized steel beams and a new concrete deck. The deck will also include new parapets and sidewalks to enhance pedestrian access and safety. In addition, the passenger waiting canopy on the bridge and the station entrance storefront will be removed and fully replaced.
The bridge replacement will feature a modernized superstructure with galvanized steel and bearing assemblies, a new concrete bridge deck, sidewalks, approach slabs, curbs and gutters, and an upgraded drainage system. Expansion joint assemblies, guard rails, trash enclosures, pedestrian shelters, and new pavement markings are also part of the improvements. Additional enhancements include the installation of LED lighting, updated signage, and curb lane painting.
The canopy replacement will involve removing the existing structure and installing a new steel canopy complete with roofing, drainage systems, LED lighting, and security cameras. The structure will also be painted and fitted with new signage.
Lastly, work on the bridge substructure will undergo concrete repairs, rebar installation, crack injection, and remediation of spalling concrete. The existing south piers and cap will be demolished down to the footing and replaced with new pier and cap structures.
We are honored to be a part of this initiative to enhance commuter safety, experience, and strengthen Chicago’s public transit infrastructure for years to come.
